One of the more common aesthetic concerns people face as they age is a noticeable difference in the visibility of their veins. Spider veins and varicose veins are unsightly issues that affect most older people, typically showing up on the legs, hands, and face. While there are products on the market that claim to reduce the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins, they very seldom deliver those results.
Dr. Boyd Erdman at Madison Medispa in Waunakee, WI, provides several vein treatments to help resolve issues like spider veins and varicose veins. Our treatment options are minimally invasive outpatient procedures that produce great results! Learn more about the various types of vein treatments at Madison Medispa below.
What Is Vein Treatment?
Vein treatments are outpatient procedures that aim to reduce the appearance and improve the symptoms caused by spider veins and varicose veins. Spider and varicose vein treatment may utilize laser technology, sclerotherapy, ultrasound, radiofrequency ablation, and other treatment modalities. These methods target the cause of your venous issues and minimize the appearance and symptoms related to spider veins, varicose veins, and vascular lesions in the hands and face.
Types of Vein Treatments
Here at Madison Medispa we offer multiple vein treatments to resolve spider veins, varicose veins, and more. Here are some of the most popular treatments:
Varicose Vein Treatment
If you consult with a professional and confirm that you have large varicose veins, you will need to have a complete upright Duplex ultrasound. This ultrasound is used as a diagnostic tool to map your venous flow. The entire ultrasound typically takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete.
Once your venous flow has been mapped, the varicose vein treatment begins. Endovenous thermal ablation is used to ablate the large varicose trunks deep to the skin’s surface. This includes the Great Saphenous Vein, Small Saphenous Vein, and Anterior Accessory Saphenous Vein.
Venous ablation can be either laser or radiofrequency technology. This first stage in the process takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete, and there is little to no downtime involved. Patients can return to work immediately after the procedure but must wear compression stockings.
Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat the branches of varicose veins. The branches that remain after the trunks of the varicose veins are ablated will be injected with foamed sclerosant. This part of the process takes about 90 minutes to complete. After their treatment, patients will be required to keep their legs elevated for the remainder of the day.
Large localized superficial branches are treated with ambulatory microphlebectomy. This is the best choice for patients concerned with their varicose veins for cosmetic reasons, as it can treat isolated varicose veins in a short timeframe.
Spider Vein Treatment
Spider veins can be treated in one of two ways. The first is with an outpatient sclerotherapy procedure, typically used on spider veins in the legs. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to one hour to complete.
Patients must remain in the office to elevate their legs for about 10 to 15 minutes after treatment. You may need to wear a compression stocking in some cases. Once discharged to return home, you can resume regular activity. After the procedure, it takes about three months to see your spider veins disappear.
Facial Vein and Rosacea Treatment
At Madison Medispa, we also treat facial veins and rosacea. More prominent facial veins, typically found under the eyes, are treated with sclerotherapy. This treatment is very quick, taking only about 20 minutes. Once complete, you will return home with compression tape over the treatment area. This can be removed after 12 hours, and patients can resume regular activity.
Smaller facial veins and rosacea are treated with surface laser and BroadBand light. This treatment takes about 30 minutes and can produce slight swelling and redness after treatment. Patients should avoid sun exposure for about two weeks after their procedure. It can take anywhere between two weeks and three months to see results when treating facial veins.
Hand Vein Treatment
Sclerotherapy is used to treat large blue veins on the tops of your hands. This procedure is very simple and takes only half an hour. The hands must be kept elevated for several hours after treatment, and patients begin seeing their hand veins dissolve over the next three months.
