What Does Vein Treatment Do?

Vein treatments are procedures that remove broken veins resulting in improved appearance and reduced symptoms caused by both spider veins and varicose veins. Spider and varicose vein treatment may utilize laser technology, sclerotherapy, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and other treatment modalities. These methods either physically remove the broken vein, or scar the vein down to a cord which your body subsequently dissolves.

Here at Madison Medispa we offer multiple types of vein treatment to remove spider veins, varicose veins, and more. Here are some of the best options:

Varicose Vein Treatment

If  your consultation confirms that you have large varicose veins, you will first need to have a complete upright Duplex ultrasound. This ultrasound is used as a diagnostic tool to map your venous flow. The entire ultrasound venous flow mapping process typically takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Once your venous flow has been mapped, the varicose vein treatment begins. Endovenous thermal ablation is used to ablate the large varicose trunks deep to the skin’s surface. This includes the Great Saphenous Vein, Small Saphenous Vein, and Anterior Accessory Saphenous Vein.

Venous ablation can be either laser or radiofrequency technology. Both use heat to cauterize the vein, and can be done as an outpatient under local anesthesia. This first stage in the process takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete, and there is little to no downtime involved. Patients can return to work immediately after the procedure but must wear compression stockings.

After any problems in the truncal veins have been addressed, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat the branches varicosities. The branches that remain after the trunks of the varicose veins are ablated will be injected with foamed sclerosant under ultrasound guidance. This part of the process takes about 90 minutes to complete and is once again done as an outpatient using only local anesthesia. After treatment, it is recommended that patients try to keep their legs elevated for the remainder of the day, only getting up once every hour to briefly move around.

Large localized superficial branches may be treated with ambulatory microphlebectomy. Once again this is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. This is an option for patients mainly concerned with one or two varicose veins for cosmetic reasons, with a short time-frame for treatment.

Spider Vein Treatment

Spider veins can be treated in one of two ways. The first is with an outpatient sclerotherapy procedure, typically used on spider veins in the legs. Sclerosant is injected into the broken veins causing them to scar down and eventually dissolve. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to one hour to complete.

Patients must remain in the office to elevate their legs for about 10 to 15 minutes after treatment. You may need to wear a compression stocking in some cases. Once discharged to return home, you can resume regular activity.

Facial Vein and Rosacea Treatment

At Madison Medispa, we also treat facial veins and rosacea. Larger blue facial veins, typically found under the eyes and along the temple, are treated with sclerotherapy. This treatment is very quick, taking only about 20 minutes. Once complete, you will return home with compression tape over the treatment area. This can be removed after 12 hours, and patients can resume regular activity.

Smaller facial veins and rosacea are treated with a combination of surface laser and BroadBand light. This treatment takes about 30 minutes and may produce slight swelling and redness after treatment. Patients should avoid sun exposure for about two weeks after their procedure.

Hand Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is used to treat large blue veins on the tops of your hands. This procedure is very simple and takes only half an hour. The hands must be kept elevated for several hours after treatment, and patients begin seeing their hand veins dissolve over the next three months.
