Spider Vein Treatment Option #1: Sclerotherapy

What it Treats:

This is the primary procedure for spider vein treatment in the legs and can be used to treat both the medium blue-green veins and smaller reddish-purple spider veins.

Procedure Time:

Typically 30-60 minutes.

Typical Recovery Time and Side Effects:

You will elevate your legs at the office for 10-15 minutes following treatment and in some cases you may be placed in a compression stocking. You can be up and walking immediately afterwards, and resume exercise by the following day.

During the first 12 hours, some aching and mild discomfort is common, but this is usually resolved by the following morning. You may use a compression stocking for 1-2 weeks after a treatment.

The most common side effects are bruising and “trapped blood,” both of which usually resolve on their own over the next 1-2 weeks.

Results:

Treated veins will collapse down into a small solid cord which is no longer visible and slowly dissolve over the next 3-months. In most cases once you have healed there will be no trace of the treated vessels.

How Does Sclerotherapy For Leg Veins Work?

Traditional visually-guided sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a sclerosant into the targeted veins. We use a medication called Polidocanol (trade name Asclara) which is basically a fancy soap that is FDA approved and was designed specifically for sclerotherapy. We never use saline which is much more painful and much less effective!

Once injected, the medication damages the vein wall, and this results in destruction of the targeted vein. The body will then slowly dissolve the tiny vein remnant over the next few months.

In most cases, we will first need to address the deeper “feeder” veins; the larger and slightly deeper blue-green colored veins. To accomplish this, we frequently utilize Veinlite, a fiber-optic light used to transilluminate the skin, which allows for much better visualization of these vessels. Knowledge of the surrounding “feeder” vessels and interconnections in the areas to be treated will allow us to provide you the longest lasting and cosmetically attractive treatment currently available.

Spider Vein Treatment Option #2:
Surface Laser and BroadBand Light

What it Treats:

These procedures are used to treat any of the very small purple spider veins, tiny red vessels, or rosacea which may be too small to inject. It is typically more useful for lower pressure facial veins (above the level of the heart) and not as useful for leg veins which are higher pressure (below the level of the heart).

Procedure Time:

Typically 30-60 minutes.

Typical Recovery Time and Side Effects:

Mild redness and swelling in the treated areas which will typically resolve overnight. You will need to avoid sun exposure to treated areas for approximately 2 weeks.

Results:

Treated veins will collapse down into a small solid cord which is no longer visible and slowly dissolve over the next 2-weeks. In most cases once you have healed there will be no trace of the treated vessels, with the exception of Rosacea, which is likely to require periodic recurrent treatment to keep under control over the course of your lifetime.

How Do Surface Laser and BroadBand Light Work?

Light energy delivered by the laser or BBL treatment rapidly heats the blood in the targeted vein. The heat absorbed by the blood damages the vein wall, which causes the vein to collapse down and subsequently dissolve.
