Facial Veins and Rosacea Treatments in Waunakee, WI
Facial Veins and Rosacea Treatments Option #1: Sclerotherapy
What it Treats:
This is the primary procedure used for treatment of the larger blue veins at the temples or underneath the eyes.
Procedure Time:
Typically 20-30 minutes.
Typical Recovery Time and Side Effects:
You will leave the office with compression tape over the treated area, therefore most of our facial vein patients choose to treat at the end of the day. You can return to normal activity immediately after treatment, and resume exercise by the following day.
During the first 12 hours after treatment, some patients experience mild aching or discomfort but this is usually resolved by the following morning. Rarely, a patient will experience minor bruising which can appear similar to a very mild black eye.
Results:
Treated veins will collapse down into a small solid cord which is no longer visible and slowly dissolve over the next 3-months. In most cases once you have healed there will be no trace of the treated vessels.
How Does Facial Vein Sclerotherapy Work?
Traditional visually-guided sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a sclerosant into the targeted veins.
We use a medication called Polidocanol (trade name Asclara) which is basically a fancy soap that is FDA approved and was designed specifically for sclerotherapy. We never use saline which is much more painful and much less effective!
Once injected, the medication damages the vein wall, and this results in destruction of the targeted vein. The body will then slowly dissolve the tiny vein remnant over the next few months.
Because we are working on the face, we use the lowest possible effective concentrations of sclerosant for saftey. Most patients are seen once per month and will typically need a series of 4-6 treatments.
Facial Veins and Rosacea Treatments Option #2: Surface Laser and BroadBand Light
What it Treats:
These procedures are used to treat any of the very small purple spider veins, tiny red vessels, or rosacea which may be too small to inject. It is also extremely effective for venous lakes in the lips. Surface laser is typically more useful for lower pressure facial veins (above the level of the heart) and not as useful for leg veins which are higher pressure (below the level of the heart).
Procedure Time:
Typically 30-60 minutes.
Typical Recovery Time and Side Effects:
You may experience mild redness and swelling in the treated areas which will typically resolve overnight. You will need to avoid sun exposure to treated areas for approximately 2 weeks.
Results:
Treated veins will collapse down into a small solid cord which is no longer visible and slowly dissolve over the next 2-weeks. In most cases once you have healed there will be no trace of the treated vessels, with the exception of Rosacea, which is likely to require periodic recurrent treatment to keep under control over the course of your lifetime.
How Does Facial Vein Surface Laser and BroadBand Light Work?
Light energy delivered by the laser or BBL treatment rapidly heats the blood in the targeted vein. The heat absorbed by the blood damages the vein wall, which causes the vein to collapse down and subsequently dissolve.
