Hand Vein Treatments: Sclerotherapy
What it Treats:
This is the primary procedure used for treatment of the larger blue veins on the top of the hands.
Procedure Time:
Typically 30 minutes.
Typical Recovery Time and Side Effects:
Your hands will be taped and you will need to do your best to keep your hands slightly elevated (keeping your elbows bent) for the rest of the day. For this reason, most of our hand vein patients will schedule toward the end of the day. You can resume normal activity immediately after treatment and resume exercise by the following day. During the first 12 hours, you may have some mild aching or discomfort but this is usually resolved by the following morning. The most common side effects are bruising and “trapped blood,” both of which usually resolve on their own over the next 1-2 weeks.
Results:
Treated veins will collapse down into a small solid cord which is no longer visible and slowly dissolve over the next 3-months. In most cases once you have healed there will be no trace of the treated vessels.
Note:
This treatment can be combined with BBL phototherapy for the age spots on your hands, and injectable fillers for age-related volume loss, for an even more youthful appearance!
How Does Hand Vein Sclerotherapy Work?
Traditional visually-guided sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a sclerosant into the targeted veins.
We use a medication called Polidocanol (trade name Asclara) which is basically a fancy soap that is FDA approved and was designed specifically for sclerotherapy. We never use saline which is much more painful and much less effective!
Once injected, the medication damages the vein wall, and this results in destruction of the targeted vein. The body will then slowly dissolve the tiny vein remnant over the next few months. Most patients are seen once per month and will typically need a series of 4-6 treatments.
